Illness and Cure is a site for change

with posts written to expose, make understandable, and deconstruct claims made about research and practice related to illness, public health and treatments - claims that are wrong, harmful, generating and worsening increasingly lethal public health crises.

Posts here are about  fundamental and enormously profitable falsehoods, debunked for decades yet persisting  against all evidence and only by being shielded from critical thought, shielded to continue to do enormous harm – fabricated lies for example, that compulsive substance use is a medical or psychiatric condition of some sort with medical treatments, that someone experiencing depressed mood has a medical condition that can be treated with a pill, that chronic pain is generally a physical condition with medical treatments.

Generous use of hyperlinks provides reader access to sources of primary research, reviews, other resources - to information, science, understanding  – integrated and made sense of here as the means to critique, dispute and dismantle as needed the fabrications perpetuating harmful healthcare practices continuously generated by the media-medical collusion that created the opioid crisis.

Commitment – one or more posts each week covering areas including the opioid crisis, mental health, substance use, chronic pain, public health epidemics in substance abuse, suicide, youth smoking and vaping, depression, and the roles of institutional medicine, the medical model, and media in creating and worsening lethal epidemics.

Once branded a “hippie scientist” in a community environmental dispute, Clark Miller is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) practicing as a child and adult psychotherapist and substance use treatment expert with training and degrees in clinical social work, philosophy and research ecology. He is originally trained as a research scientist in biology and is published in the fields of ecology and mental health including original research and critical analyses of research design, methodology and interpretation. He lives on the Oregon coast.

Crisis is a necessary condition for a questioning of doxa, but is not in itself a sufficient condition for the production of a critical discourse.
